Artist Houssein Miloudi is exhibiting his recent works at art gallery L'Atelier 21, from December 16, 2014 to January 24, 2015.
In this exhibition, entitled Nostalgie, the artist has drawn inspiration from his earlier works, early research and archives. He has engaged in a rare and original exercise: revisiting the different periods that have marked his career as a visual artist. A career spanning over 45 years of uninterrupted work. Since his first solo exhibition in 1968 in Marrakech, Houssein Miloudi has never ceased to leave his mark on the plastic arts in Morocco, with a language that draws its expressive force from traditional sources: the writing on tablets at the Msid, the graphics on amulets (hjab) to protect against the evil eye, and the forms printed on rural art. Miloudi's originality lies in the fact that, while drawing inspiration from forms rooted in local culture, he has developed a plastic language that does not refer directly or literally to his sources of inspiration. This language has enriched Moroccan art and made Houssein Miloudi one of Morocco's most influential painters. The city of Essaouira's pictorial renown owes much to the forms and supports (wood and skin in particular) introduced by Miloudi into his work in the late 60s.
