Painter Saad Hassani is exhibiting his recent works, from January 28 to February 25, 2014, at art gallery L'Atelier 21.
This exhibition shows the never-ending game that Saad Hassani has been playing with paint for several years. The result is of little importance to him. What interests him is the game itself, whose uncertain outcome engages him wholeheartedly in his art. If Hassani were to judge a game as won, it would only be the beginning of beginnings for him. For years, Hassani has understood that in painting: whoever loses, wins. Writer Bernard Collet defines the artist's approach in these terms in the preface to the exhibition catalog: “One might say that, in the continuity of a body of work in which the true subject has always been painting itself, this is a culmination, an attempt to simplify still further the representational codes he had used until then - and I'm thinking, of course, of the figure of the chessboard and its metaphorical power - to achieve something that would be of the order of the trace, the memory of a form, its hollow mark of absence like that left by a body in an unmade bed. ”
