After Orientalismes in 2010 and Luxe, désordre et volupté in 2013, Majida Khattari continues her passionate exploration of Western art history with a new series of photographs, Corps ornés.
In her photographic works, Majida Khattari revisits and recreates the clichés that dominate Orientalist painting. By reconstituting settings inspired by famous Orientalist compositions, Majida Khattari “contemporizes” her characters, endowing them with an uncertain status that is both fantasy and photographic reality. The freedom and sensuality brought to the West by Orientalist painters are present, but the codes and visual expressions of representation are imperceptibly displaced and hijacked.
