In 2008, Mahi Binebine inaugurated L'Atelier 21. Almost 15 years later, the artist takes over the walls of L'Atelier 21, from Wednesday December 7, 2022 to January 7, 2023, for what he says will be his last solo exhibition in Morocco. Entitled Pas de deux, this exhibition marks the artist's intimacy with painting over more than thirty years. It marks the maturity of an approach whose focal point is the human.
As Olivier Rachet, the author of the exhibition catalog's introductory text, explains, Mahi Binebine's works “tell a single story that runs from one space to the next, made up of separations, exiles, firm bodies-to-bodies, but also reconciliations, embraces and rediscovered fraternities. The theme of confinement, so dear to the artist, is never far away, but today it is displaced on a technical level, through thousands of nails handcrafted from wood. If we approach the bas-reliefs in which these nails appear, we can observe that they strangely resemble pencils, as if the concern for narrative were always taking over.”
