From December 5, 2023 to January 5, 2024, artist Bouchta El Hayani takes over L'Atelier 21 art gallery in Casablanca for the very first time, for a retrospective exhibition covering 50 years of creation.
The retrospective will immerse visitors in the works of one of Morocco's leading figures in the visual arts. Over the years, Bouchta El Hayani has built up a body of work that is permeated by many of the issues that have constantly weighed on Moroccan plastic art, but at the same time endows it with a distinctive sound that attests to a temperament that rebels against a particular school or clan. “If we take the time to look back over the 50 years of the work of a painter like Bouchta El Hayani, we will be able to measure the coherence of a plastic oeuvre placed under the sign of a modernity that turns its back on tradition less than it transforms its heritage,” emphasizes writer Olivier Rachet in the text of the exhibition catalog.
