Mohamed Abouelouakar was born in 1946 in Marrakech.

Mohamed Abouelouakar devoted himself to painting after a rich career in the cinema. From 1966 to 1973, the artist pursued advanced studies at the Moscow Cinematographic Institute. Hadda, the feature film he directed in 1984, won him the grand prize at the 2nd Moroccan National Film Festival. Abouelouakar is also an art photographer.

His experience of the 7th art has left its mark on his paintings, in which the compositions are skilfully orchestrated, staged and dramatized.

Mohamed Abouelouakar's paintings are influenced by Russian lyricism and Byzantine miniature. Many of his early paintings are characterized by vivid colors and a profusion of figures that leave no part of the canvas untreated. In his works, we find a corpus of figures, symbols and atmosphere borrowed from the Western repertoire, but always reinterpreted according to the prism and references of his own culture.

His works are part of prestigious collections including those of Attijariwafa bank (Morocco), Musée Africain d'Art Contemporain Al Maadem (Morocco), Fondation ONA (Morocco) and Artoteek (Netherlands).

Mohamed Abouelouakar died in September 2022 in Elektrostal, Russia.
